Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar sifted for smoothness
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened but not melted
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk whole milk preferred
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract real vanilla preferred
  • pinch salt enhances sweetness

Equipment

  • Sifter
  • Mixing bowls
  • Hand or stand mixer
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Sift the powdered sugar into a large mixing bowl to remove any lumps, ensuring a silky, smooth frosting surface.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter with a mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes, until it becomes light and fluffy, filling your kitchen with a warm, creamy aroma.
  3. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar to the creamed butter, about ½ cup at a time, mixing on low speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl regularly to keep the mixture even and smooth.
  4. Pour in the vanilla extract and start with 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix on low, then increase to medium speed until the frosting becomes glossy, smooth, and easy to spread. Add more milk a teaspoon at a time if it feels too stiff.
  5. Adjust the flavor with a pinch of salt and mix again. If you want to add color, incorporate gel food coloring gradually, mixing thoroughly for an even, vibrant hue.
  6. Once the frosting is shiny, silky, and spreadable, give it a final stir to ensure all ingredients are well combined. Its texture should be creamy and hold a soft peak when lifted.
  7. Use immediately to decorate cooled sugar cookies by spreading or piping. For best results, let the frosting sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes after spreading to enhance the glossy finish.

Notes

For a more tangy frosting, add a bit of cream cheese. Adjust the milk and sugar to get your desired consistency and glossiness. Resting the frosting covered at room temperature helps develop its shine.
